Chic at 60ish!

Looking and feeling great at every age

My blog is back!

Hello readers—my blog is back! Amazingly, it’s five years since I closed “Fashion at 50ish!” Like many of you, I’ve been through some changes, good and bad. The one constant? Still a fashionista. Still love to get dressed.

Yes, I am a dinosaur. My children tell me all the time. One of the few who still likes to talk on the phone, rather than text; one of the last who still prefers a book to hold, then keep on the shelf, like a friend.

But I am most old-fashioned when it comes to getting dressed. A Main Line fashion columnist for 20 years, then a blogger, I love clothes! For me, part of the fun of going out is deciding what to wear—choosing my outfit, just the right jewelry, shoes, and bag.

Though I know some find this tiresome—and perhaps superfluous—I do not think I’m alone. Sure, the world and the way we dress has changed since covid—we are all more casual. But many women–particularly those close to and over 60–constantly question how to tweak fashion for those no longer 30 years old.

As a result, with fashion coverage for the 60ish set becoming harder and harder to find, I’ve decided to restart my blog. For those who’ve read my past blog and columns, you will recognize my tips on trends and how to interpret them, as well as beauty, menswear, designer interviews, and “Ask Ellyn.

LOVE LEATHER: Black vegan leather jacket & flared pants at veronicabeard.com

So, what’s hot for fall? You must have wide-leg pants. If super-wide is not flattering, go wider than the straight, cigarette leg you’ve been wearing. The perfect way to update your wardrobe immediately. Other must-haves? Metallics, in all shades from silver & gold to pewter & bronze. Mix with neutrals— black, grey, camel and ivory. Black and white is forever—and one trend that never seems stale. On a similar note, animal prints are always stunning, neutral, and forever “in.”

GO FOR GOLD: Alexander McQueen gold paillette evening dress from neimanmarcus.com

Leather is huge. Jackets, coats, pants, tops—motorcycle jackets, blazers, wide-leg pants, leggings. Seen on every runway, available at every price point, this is your fall splurge.

ONE IS NOT ENOUGH: John Hardy silver & gold bracelets at neimanmarcus.com

Accessories? Big structured handbags, ultra-high boots or ankle booties, and lower heels. Nothing makes legs look longer and leaner than stilettos, but if you find they’re killers, a kitten heel or block heel looks terrific this season. Are you wearing just one bracelet as you’re reading this? Stop and go put on another. I love stacks of bracelets—yes, more is better. I love layers of necklaces too.

BLOCK IT OUT: Black & white ankle boots with block heel at chanel.com

This fall options are everywhere. Skirt lengths become longer or super-short with tights; if you’re 60ish, lengthen anything above your knee. Yes, designers all showed wide pants—but wear what flatters—remembering to pair skinny pants with a full blouse or tunic-y top and flowy pants with a slim or cropped jacket or top.

Starting to feel hungry for fashion? Run to your favorite store and grab something new for fall. A leather jacket, a leopard belt, a fabulous pair of boots, a longer skirt, something metallic. Options abound. It’s all in your attitude. And that’s the real signature of the season and the 60ish fashionista.
