The days are cooler; the nights darker. Fall has arrived & my fall wardrobe is out in full force—I’m reaching for leather jackets & blazers every day. Boots look—and feel—great. So do loafers. I’m also loving my wide-leg pants & long flowy skirts with cropped sweaters. Add big earrings & I am dressed!
Whether you’re headed to a special event, shopping in stores, scrolling online, or just wondering what to wear every morning, here’s my “BUY/KEEP/DONATE” list for fall:
BUY:
A fabulous jacket to throw over everything—maybe in leather or suede
A pair of wider-leg jeans—don’t go crazy, buy what’s flattering
High-waisted flowy or flared pants—again, chose what looks best on you
A chunky sweater
Loafers–the newest have a thick sole
Hoop earrings
Something neutral—a sweater, skirt or pants in cocoon, camel or cognac

BUY: A fabulous jacket–my favorite go-to black leather moto jacket, from Joie at neimanmarcus.com

BUY: A chunky sweater, G. Label bronze sweater at goop.com

BUY: A stunning dress & handbag in a neutral shade; cocoon-color faux fur-trimmed sheath dress & handbag at prada.com

BUY:Beautiful wear-with-everything hoop earrings, from ippolita.com
KEEP:
Skinny or boot leg jeans or pants—they’re flattering & they’ll be back
Sneakers—for working out only—time to put real shoes on
A great white shirt
Ballet flats
Sling-back pumps—very “lady chic”
All things red—including red lipstick—looks pretty against fall’s neutrals

KEEP: Boot leg jeans–still super-flattering–platinum charmeuse shirt from ralphlauren.com; grey print jeans from robertocavalli.com

KEEP: Skinny pants, they’ll be back! Ivory cable sweater & slim stone-color pants from loropiana.com

KEEP: Slingback pumps, at prada.com

KEEP: the white shirt, DONATE: the low-rise jeans!
DONATE:
Anything with cut-outs or illusion through your middle—or worse, a bare midriff—so overdone & just not elegant at 60ish—to me, those dresses look ice skating costumes, enough!
Platform shoes
Low-rise jeans—if you’re 60ish, they’re never coming back—simply not flattering
There is a refinement to clothes this season—the look is more polished & pulled together than it’s been in years. Classy, but cool–the best looks have attitude. “Demure” is an adjective fashionistas haven’t used in years–suddenly, every Paris fashion show used it. You’ll notice it everywhere at every price point. A backlash to the sloppiness of covid? To the horror of the news every day? “Think nostalgia chic, lady chic.” Casual luxe. Easy elegance. All with a bit of edge. Enjoy every pretty moment~ Ellyn Golder Saft
