So what’s the deal with pants this season? A question I am asked frequently. Wide? Slim? Slouchy? Cropped? Cargo? A buffet of choices!

THE PROLIFERATION OF PANTS: Michael Kors Collection ivory silk tiered top from neimanmarcus.com; Avenue Montaigne black sheer wool pants from Grove 121 in Bryn Mawr
It’s pants chaos out there. And frankly, tough to build a wardrobe around them. Designers showed every silhouette from super-wide to skinny to stovepipe. Jodhpurs to harem pants. High-waisted to low-slung. Are you seeing a trend?

A PANTS BUFFET: An array of pants in a variety of shapes at neimanmarcus.com; red stovepipe pants & matching coat at bottegaveneta.com
The trend becomes: Wear what looks best, wear your mood, wear what’s fitting to the occasion. Of course, everything is available at every price point. There’s also a political statement for women here: Wear what feels good! Liberation? Respect? To me, a bit of both.
Another answer is a backlash to the sloppiness of covid—be comfortable but be properly dressed. Be polished & put together. I like that!

POLISHED & PULLED-TOGETHER: Mix & match–flared olive & burgundy plaid pants & jacket; flared burgundy velvet pants & jacket, all from ralphlauren.com
One pair of pants does not work for everyone or every body—particularly at 60ish. The newest are certainly wider—go as wide as you can, while looking & feeling comfortable. That’s what’s fashionable.

CHANGE YOUR PANTS WITH YOUR MOOD: Wide-leg jeans from stellamccartney.com; slim cocoa wool pants & ivory cashmere sweater from loropiana.com
Can you wear skinny jeans tucked into boots one day & wide-leg trousers the next? Of course you can. Remember to keep your silhouette in a “V” or inverted “V.” Looser, longer blouses & blazers with skinny bottoms; cropped shirts & jackets with a wider leg. Looking like a balloon is never fashionable!

Wear what’s flattering, what looks best, where your mood takes you. That’s the deal with pants at 60ish! Enjoy every chic moment~ Ellyn Golder Saft

ps. My passion for fashion is topped only by my passion for making the world a better place! Heartfelt gratitude to all who joined my family & me for the “Cis Golder Quality of Life Grant” event at Boyds Wayne last week–combining philanthropy & fashion for a very special, meaningful evening. Named in memory of my beloved mother, almost $4 million has been disbursed to women with financial need as they battle breast cancer–over 4,000 Grants! (l-r) My son Jonathan, me in my Silvia Tcherassi sequin pants from Boyds, my daughter Lauren & my mother’s dearest friend Jane Zolot, who at 93-years-young, stopped the show–in the best way possible! An inspiration to us all!
