As fall kicks into high gear, it becomes a bit overwhelming to decide what to buy, what you already own that’s totally of-the-moment, and what to put in the back of your closet for now—or give away altogether. Mornings have become cool; there’s nothing worse than debating outfits with yourself when you’ve got to get out the door. So here’s a good “Buy/Keep/Donate” list, as well as some ideas if you’re in the stores or cruising through favorite retail sites on a chilly afternoon. Nothing more fun than opening packages full of fashion!
BUY:

BUY: Collection cognac belted jacket from ralphlauren.com; my favorite Chloe mocha silk blouse & Michael Kors lace flared pants from Boyds in Philadelphia; fringed moto jacket from neimanmarcus.com; equestrian silk shirt & flowy skirt from ralphlauren.com; platinum silk shirt, pants & coat from armani.com; velvet flared pants from l’agence.com; over-the-knee boots from stuartweitzman.com
A fabulous jacket—maybe leather or suede—to throw over everything
Something in a neutral color—camel, cognac or whiskey
Something velvet
A pair of wider or flared jeans
Flowy or flared dressy pants
A longer languid skirt
High boots & chunky heels
A structured, boxier handbag
Something unique & individual—something beaded, studded or artisanal
KEEP:

KEEP: “Ruth” flared jeans (my favorite style!) at l’agence.com; an array of white cotton shirts at ralphlauren.com; Gucci “Sylke” loafers at neimanmarcus.com; red faux croc bag at armani.com; stacks of bangles at neimanmarcus.com; trying red lipstick at Saks Fifth Avenue in Bala Cynwyd
Skinny or boot leg jeans—they’re flattering & they’ll be back
A great white shirt
Your favorite jean jacket
Ballet flats & loafers
Anything red—including red lipstick
Bold statement jewelry, dangly earrings & stacks of bracelets—real or faux
STORE OR DONATE:

DONATE: Anything with spandex, latex, cut-outs or illusion—Kim Kardashian in her “birthday suit” dress, just wrong on every level, even if you’re Kim K!
Anything with cut-outs or illusion through your middle—so overdone & just not elegant—to me, those dresses look ice skating costumes, enough!
Platform shoes & peep-toe pumps
Low-rise jeans—if you’re 60ish, they’re never coming back—simply not flattering
Though this is the season of “personality chic” or “wear what you love,” there is an overall refinement to clothes this spring—the look is neater, more polished & pulled together than it’s been in years. You’ll notice it everywhere at every price point. Quiet luxury. Easy elegance. All with a bit of attitude & edge. Enjoy every gorgeous moment~ Ellyn Golder Saft

ps. Do you love a book that you can’t wait to come home & read? Me too. Don’t miss “The Academy” by bestseller Elin Hilderbrand & her daughter Shelby Cunningham—not really a “fashion book,” but the students are certainly fashionistas. What’s more, you will clearly envision teachers, guys & girls who were friends of your kids or your own high school teachers & friends, as you become involved with the characters. I can’t put it down! At amazon.com.
