Just like that, Sarah Jessica Parker turned 59 last week. Almost 60ish! Though it has been 20 years since we watched her—and her evolving wardrobe—on “Sex and the City,” I remain a major fan, toasting both her birthday and the announcement of her return to HBO’s “And Just Like That,” the continuing story of life at almost-60ish for Carrie, Charlotte & Miranda.

ONE SINGULAR SENSATION: Obviously strictly red carpet, but look how Sarah Jessica Parker’s hat takes her from princess-y to smashing with one accessory–try a big, stunning hat this spring & see what it does for your favorite dress

TIP YOUR HAT: At 60ish, we all spend too much on serums & creams to let the sun on our faces–try a great wide-brimmed hat–this one is a favorite, given to me by friends in Boca for my birthday last year
It seems appropriate to sip a cosmo (dated, but still delish), then shop for a pair of great shoes, gorgeous bag, or beautiful belt. Now an exquisite NYC fashion doyenne, SJP remains more relevant than ever, continually showing us not only how to be true to your inner fashionista, but also how to have fun with personal style. Exactly what this season’s trends are all about.

Whether she’s in Oscar de la Renta or jeans, Sarah Jessica always looks perfect. Though not a classic beauty, she has more chic in her pinky than ten Hollywood actresses put together. How does she do it? Often with accessories. Think back. SJP—and her alter ego Carrie Bradshaw—were among the first to teach America about designer stilettos and the lift they bring. Conversely, she could throw on a pair of ballet flats bought on a NYC street corner, pair them with jeans or a flowy skirt—so Spring 2024—and look equally fantastic.

BAG IT: Pale blue Bottega Veneta & white Valentino handbags, both at neimanmarcus.com; the new jeweled version of the iconic “Jackie” bag (if I could buy one new thing, this would be it!), at gucci.com
The same goes for handbags. SJP’s myriad Chanel & Fendi bags are legendary, yet she’ll also wear a cheapo clutch in a bold color, giving a needed pop to the simplest ensemble. (Remember, color is an accessory too.) She loves silk flowers and antique pins on lapels. Cool belts. Loads of bangles. The queen of accessories, she showed us how to easily turn an outfit from day into night, funky to festive, always fabulous.

HIGH OR LOW, HANDBAGS HELP CREATE YOUR LOOK: (top) A variety of handbags at Boyds in Wayne; (center & bottom) SJP as Carrie Bradshaw, carrying an Hermes “Kelly” bag & a thrift shop fuchsia top-handle–different looks for different moods on different days!
If you buy one new accessory this season, make it a structured bag. Available at every price point, a top-handled or cross-body bag looks modern and clean. For evening, a clutch is the perfect accent.

CHANGE YOUR VIBE WHEN YOU CHANGE YOUR SHOES: An array of Manolo Blahniks; black YSL loafers, all from neimanmarcus.com
Last week I spent the afternoon at a beautiful birthday luncheon in center city. Bold-shouldered jacket, statement pants, my mom’s beautiful turquoise & diamond pin. (Soo SJP!) Going out for dinner that night, I just switched the pin for layers of gold jewelry, the dressy pants for leather jeans, the heels for loafers, creating a whole new look in an instant. Belts, bags, bracelets, shoes. Each element dresses you up or down. It’s all in the details!

MUST HAVE LAYERS OF JEWELRY: SJP in ropes of pearls–one of my favorite looks & so “in this spring; me, wearing my mother’s turquoise & gold “little chickie” pin, one of my favorite things–and hers!
More must-have accessories: Sunglasses, big watches (even if you use your phone as a clock), colorful jewelry, real or faux. One stunning accessory makes last year’s outfit sing! Enjoy every magnificent moment~ Ellyn Golder Saft
ps. Like “Sex and the City’s” Carrie Bradshaw, I have wonderful girlfriends who keep me sane, supported & loved. Let’s toast cherished friends–surely the best accessory of all! Here’s my favorite cosmo recipe from Ina Garten:

1 cup vodka
1/2 cup Triple Sec or Cointreau
1/2 cup cranberry juice
1/4 cup freshly squeezed lime juice
Pour all ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake well and pour through a strainer into four martini glasses. Cheers!
