Welcome back & welcome to fall! I love autumn. Crisp days, colorful trees, crackling fires. But what I love most are the clothes. Even when I was young, I always looked better in a blazer & boots than a bathing suit! You too?

Whatever your politics, this is a scary moment in the world. Fashion responds. Fall’s buzzwords become: “Nostalgia fashion.” “Personality fashion.” Interpreted, that means clothes that bring comfort, that are personal, that you feel great in— clothes that remind you of happier times.

NOSTALGIA FASHION, TIMELESS FASHION: (top) Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis & Carolyn Bessette Kennedy in iconic looks that are as chic today as they were 30 years ago; (center) tweed suit from chanel.com; (bottom) cognac leather jacket, black sweater, pants, belt, boots & white ruffled shirt from ralphlauren.com
The poster girl? Carolyn Bessette Kennedy. And–eternally—her mother-in-law, Jackie. This is exactly the way you want to look.Last month, many of us watched “American Prince: JFK Jr.” (Still streaming on CNN) If you’re like me, you’ve read every book, watched every documentary & docu-drama about the Kennedys. This summer marked 26 years that John & Carolyn are gone—we’ve seen it all, heard it all, there’s nothing new under the sun. And yet…

FOREVER FAN! Sarah Pidgeon as CBK & Naomi Watts at JKO in the upcoming “John & Carolyn: American Love Story;” a very “Carolynish” white cashmere coat from therow.com
We love it all. No matter how many times we’ve seen each photo & TV clip, we watch. Are you excited for FX’s “John & Carolyn: American Love Story,” premiering on Valentine’s Day? Of course you are. I cannot imagine a better gift! Naomi Watts (love her!) plays Jackie, Sarah Pidgeon plays CBK.

ICONIC OUTFIT: Utimate “Carolynish” classic white shirt & long black skirt with JFK Jr; also very Carolynish, sage silk blouse & skirt at fendi.com
You know every outfit & you want every outfit. Neutral colors. Black, white, camel. Big bags. High boots. Statement coats. Flowing blonde hair (an accessory). And a red lip (also an accessory). That’s your look for fall. Of course, JFK Jr on your arm is the best accessory—but how many of us are Carolyn Bessette? 🙂

EVERYTHING OLD IS NEW AGAIN: Walking in NYC with JFK Jr, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy in a black cashmere sweater & cognac corduroy pants; Naomi Watts as Jackie & Jackie in NYC, both in completely of-the-moment big sunglasses & chunky sweaters; white cashmere sweater & black leather pants at hermes.com; CBK in a timeless long, white Versace coatdress; similar grey beaded coatdress at armani.com; Christian Dior red lipstick—so Carolyn—at neimanmarcus.com
Think simple, clean lines. Nothing that screams. Nothing gaudy. Chunky sweaters. White man-tailored shirts. Even headbands are back. Cool. Sophisticated. Glamorous with edge. In a mean world, this is good for the soul. Invest, indulge & enjoy every “nostalgia chic” moment—welcome back to my blog~ Ellyn Golder Saft

ps. As I’m writing, Chloe Malle has just been named the new head of editorial content for American Vogue & Giorgio Armani has passed away—two huge fashion stories, impacting & engaging fashionistas around the world. More on both next week!
