Last week I had the pleasure of staying with dear friends at their magnificent home in Mirasol, in Palm Beach Gardens. I grew up going to the Boca Beach Hotel, then my dad lived in a high-rise building on the beach in Boca —though I’d been to Palm Beach a million times for dinner or shopping on Worth Avenue, I’d never been further north. And it is gorgeous!!! Fabulous homes. Exquisite landscaping. Golf courses & tennis courts. Beautiful club house. Paradise!

ROOM WITH A VIEW: The wonderful view from Susie’s back patio in Mirasol
But the best part of course is visiting with cherished friends—Susie & I have been friends since 8th grade & she was my roommate through college. My roommate before Steve! Her partner David is a doll—it took about two seconds to pick up right where we left off when we went to Paris together last year.

SISTERS BY CHOICE! My cherished friend Susie & me—my roommate before Steve!—in her foyer. Don’t you love the wall of album covers? On me, very boho Michael Kors Collection lace pants from neimanmarcus.com
Another great part of a warm weather vacation is the clothes! There’s no better feeling than pulling out white jeans when it’s cold & windy outside. (Can you believe they lost my luggage? Of all people!! Don’t worry, I got it back that night :-)) Of course, it’s always fun to have just one new thing—which I ran & bought when they lost my suitcase. Available at every price point, resort fashion follows both the beautiful scenery and outdoor lifestyle. Choose hues the color of warm sand, cool water, and magnificent sunsets.

CHOOSE SOMETHING THE COLOR OF SAND: Ivory embellished cashmere sweater from autumncashmere.com; Kaliza scarf dress from veronicabeard.com; white crocheted dress & metallic bag from donnakaran.com
Start with something ivory or white. A great top, a fabulous pair of wider- leg pants or jeans, a smashing handbag. Add something neutral, the shade of sand in the morning, or something gold or silver, as sand appears as dusk.

SUNSET COLORS: Ronin gold pants at veronicabeard.com; red & white top & silk pants at akris.com
If that does not appeal, try a bold color. Something luscious. Something the color of your first margarita on arrival. (Mine was pomegranate!) Raspberry is the color of the moment; orange, lemon & lime citrus colors are omnipresent. I also love a creamy pastel. Icy blue, powder pink, pale yellow. Bold or soft, pair it all with white.

NAVY & WHITE, ALWAYS RIGHT: Melony white dress & Tilda navy & white striped skirt at ralphlauren.com; when I lost my luggage, I ran to Saks & grabbed these cool Derek Lam 10 Crosby sailor pants to wear to dinner that night—American Airlines says it will reimburse you for incidentals, but I’m guessing that means a toothbrush, not a new pair of pants!!!!
“Boho” is huge. Flowy tops. Lace-y blouses and dresses. Florals and prints abound. All so soft and easy. Nautical is right in any resort. Navy and white, something striped. Add a touch of gold. Lots of big buttons. Try sailor pants with a shrunken top or jacket. Very modern. Very classic.

WIDEN YOUR HORIZONS: Wide-leg Kasey embellished light-washed jeans & Komi white eyelet pants, both from veronicabeard.com
You will see wide-leg pants & jeans again & again. Try a pair of light-washed jeans & start wearing them right now. (You know the best merchandise comes in first.) Are straight legs out? No. If they flatter your figure—at 60ish—wear what you feel best in.

WRAPPING ABOUT SHOES: Dolce & Gabbana floral wedges; Valentino metallic platform sandals; Manolo Blahnik flat sandals; Sofia camel pashmina, all at neimanmarcus.com
Mix it all with strappy sandals. The wider leg takes a heel or wedge, especially for evening, but flats in a resort feel chic also. Do not forget a wonderful wrap. Nights are often cool and it seems every restaurant is over-air conditioned. Wear it over your coat when you return.

SPRING AHEAD: This is exactly how you want to look for resort & into spring; Jennifer Connelly in a white silk top, pants & handbag from louisvuitton.com
Relax and have fun. That’s what vacations are all about. Indulge now—this is a beautiful foreshadow of what is to come for spring. Elegance with edge. Quiet luxury. Invest in a few fabulous pieces, then create new looks every night. Wishing you a wonderful trip—even if you are just daydreaming in your closet—enjoy every sun-splashed minute—Ellyn Golder Saft

ps. You won’t want to miss “DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS, AMERICA’S NEXT TOP MODEL” executive producer, Lauren Saft, Wednesday March 11 at 9 pm on E! Channel 833 (on Comcast). All the gossip about Tyra Banks, all the back-stories. And of course my daughter is the exec producer! It’s really good—Don’t miss it!
Like most everyone, I am obsessed with “Love Story/JFK Jr & Carolyn Bessette,” starring Sarah Pidgeon & Paul Anthony Kelly, new episodes on FX on Thursdays & streaming on Hulu. The clothes! The apartments. The chemistry between them. The meaning of “magnificent!” I cannot wait for a new episode Thursday night at 9:00. A must-see for every fashionista.
